ENH Nuclear&Hydrogen is the new subsidiary of ETS S.p.A., based in Bergamo entirely dedicated to engineering design, works supervision and technical services in the field of nuclear facilities and hydrogen production, storage and transport plants.

In the nuclear sector, ETS NH covers the entire chain of activities: manufacturing of high-tech critical components, design and construction of new facilities, decommissioning activities and advanced research in the areas of waste management, nuclear fusion, fourth-generation reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The new company has also been selected by the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (Milan Polytechnic Foundation) as a host organization for students and trainees of the Master’s Degree Program in Nuclear Engineering, considering the limited presence in Italy of highly specialized industrial companies operating in this field.

Nuclear services provided by ETS:

  • Simulation of radioactive particle transport in support of engineering design, performed using Monte Carlo codes
  • Development of risk and safety analyses for nuclear accidents and radiation dose assessment
  • Implementation of radiation protection measures
  • Coordination with suppliers and management of inventory and tracking of nuclear instrumentation

OUR PROJECTS IN THE NUCLEAR SECTOR

Preliminary design of the technology park next to the temporary repository, designed as a research and innovation center focused on the development of advanced technologies for the sustainable management of radioactive waste.

The park will host activities related to experimentation, environmental monitoring, technical training and industrial research, aiming to promote the transition to an integrated, safe and sustainable approach to the radioactive waste management cycle.

A techno-economic feasibility study aimed at designing an integrated facility for the treatment, filling and conditioning of solid radioactive waste, including automated compaction and cementation lines.

The project focuses on optimizing waste volume reduction, stabilization and packaging processes, while ensuring that the final products fully comply with the acceptance criteria of the National Repository and meet the highest standards of radiation protection, operational safety, and environmental control.

Feasibility study for the development of a temporary storage facility dedicated to the safe containment of low and ultra-low activity radioactive waste.

The project includes analysis of confinement barriers, definition of radiological monitoring systems, and design of operational flows, access routes, and handling procedures, in accordance with IAEA safety standards and national radiation protection regulations.

Development and prototyping of an innovative, patent-protected air purification system designed for the removal of airborne radioactive particles in confined environments.

The device is suitable for nuclear decommissioning areas and environments naturally contaminated with radon and its derivatives.
It combines multistage mechanical filtration with high-efficiency electrostatic processes to reduce airborne radioactive concentrations and improve radiological air quality.

Collaboration with BAQ Sàrl

Founded in 2019 in Geneva by nuclear engineer Stefano Romano and nuclear physicist Alessandro Curioni, BAQ Sàrl is a spin-off of CERN specializing in applied nuclear engineering, dosimetry and radiation protection. Over the years, the company has strengthened its position in the sector by signing a framework agreement with Sogin, the Italian state-owned company responsible for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and the management of radioactive waste.

Over the years, the company has strengthened its position in the sector by signing a framework agreement with Sogin, the Italian state-owned company responsible for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and the management of radioactive waste. BAQ stands out for its strong innovation-driven approach and its continuous commitment to research and development, with particular focus on advanced air purification systems for radioactive contaminants. By successfully transferring cutting-edge technologies from the research environment to practical market applications, BAQ has further reinforced its leadership through collaborations with Innosuisse, the Haute école du paysage, d’ingénierie et d’architecture de Genève (HEPIA), and Health Canada.

Since 2021, ETS and BAQ have been working together on highly specialized projects in the field of nuclear engineering. This partnership was established to integrate complementary expertise: on one hand, ETS’s extensive experience in multidisciplinary engineering design and complex project management; on the other, BAQ’s advanced technical know-how in nuclear applications engineering.

This collaboration translates into a dynamic operational synergy across projects requiring cross-disciplinary expertise, including the modeling and simulation of radioactive particle transport integrated into building engineering design, as well as quantitative radiological risk assessments for complex accidental scenarios within articulated construction projects.

In addition, the partnership extends to the design of advanced air purification systems—an area in which BAQ has developed recognized expertise through its research on the removal of radioactive contaminants from indoor environments.
